Lisney bolsters squad

Fisher are pleased to announce Gary Lisney’s first batch of summer signings which include former Derby County and Margate Captain Dan Young.

The 22 year old Centre Back who was made Margate Captain last season spent three years as a regular for the Ryman Premier side. Young has already impressed in pre-season earning the Man-of-the-Match award in the recent friendly against a Dagenham & Redbridge XI.

Icelandic National Einar Benediksson has also signed, the 27 year old central midfielder most recently played in the New York City Cosmopolitan League (5th tier of the USA Soccer Pyramid) for Barnstonworth Rovers. James Pope, Charlie Pearce and Callum Roberts have all moved across from landlords Dulwich Hamlet and former Croydon, Holmesdale and Dartford forward Dexter Babalola brings in further experience.

The club are delighted to put on record that the following players have all re-signed for the club from last season’s squad; Adam Lisney, Kris Hollidge, Jimmy Beaucamp, Luis Rozan, Bryan Glover, Jamie Lawrence, Cedric Abraham, George Savage, Mark Lewis, Raphael Akala, Joe Goodwin.

Fisher Manager Gary Lisney commented; ‘I’m still busy finalising the squad and there’ll be further signings to follow including two or three from last season’s side. Our preparations are going well and as I’ve said we’re a million miles further ahead than we were this time last year. We’ve got one more friendly away at Hullbridge next Tuesday and then we’re all geared up for Greenwich Borough at home on the Saturday – the boys are all looking forward to the new season.’

Fisher 1 – 4 Leyton

Fisher fans look on from the balcony at Mellish Fields

Fisher’s return to Rotherhithe ended in defeat as Leyton ran out easy winners on a baking hot afternoon at Mellish Fields.

Fisher’s line-up consisted of a mixture of first team regulars and triallists, as manager Gary Lisney split his squad between this game and a behind closed doors friendly with Croydon Athletic played earlier in the day. Leyton’s pace and power proved too much, although Fish briefly threatened a comeback when Cedric Abraham reduced the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half.

In the earlier game, a Fisher XI lost narrowly 3-2 to a strong side put out by Ryman Premier outfit Croydon Athletic.

A final tune-up before the season starts will see Fisher travel to Hullbridge Sports of the Essex Senior League on Tuesday 3rd August, further details to follow.

Fisher 3 – 2 Dagenham & Redbridge XI

Fisher v Dagenham match actionAn excellent win for the Fish at Champion Hill last night, goals from Glover, Babalola and Rozan securing a win over a young Daggers side.

You can read the report at Kentish Football.

Next up for the Fish is a return to Rotherhithe on Saturday, where we take on Leyton FC in a friendly to be held at Mellish Fields, Bacon’s College – just a stone’s throw away from the Surrey Docks Stadium. Entry to Fisher’s first game in the Bermondsey area since we left the SDS is free, just turn up on the day for a 3pm kick-off.

Wayne Burnett returns…

Wayne BurnettThis Wednesday the Fish host league one newcomers Dagenham & Redbridge FC at Champion Hill Stadium and welcome back ex-Fisher Athletic manager Wayne Burnett.

Wayne has had two separate spells at the helm of the Fish, the latter spell taking Fisher to their highest league position in over twenty years – finishing 4th in the Conference South in 2007-08.

Thankfully for the club, Gary and Wayne have remained good friends since the days when Gary used to assist Wayne in the Fisher hot-seat, and he and Dagenham have kindly accepted the offer of another big pre-season friendly following on from the Millwall game last week.

Fisher would also like to welcome representatives from Supporters Direct to Champion Hill on Wednesday as the club continues to establish a close relationship with the organistaion as well as develop and progress under the current supporters trust run model.

Fisher 2 – 0 Millwall XI

Fisher v MillwallFisher began their pre-season campaign in perfect fashion with a shock victory over a Millwall XI at Champion Hill.

The Championship side rarely threatened a well-organised and extremely confident display from Fisher, who impressed with goals in either half from Mark Lewis and George Savage.

The day saw Fisher attain a new record attendance (as Fisher FC) as 244 supporters flocked to the stadium whilst soaking up the afternoon sun. This beat the club’s previous best of 222 against Beckenham Town last year.

Millwall fielded a youthful side with the team mainly consisting of players from their Under 18’s alongside younger senior-squad fringe players Connor McClaren and Liam Kingsmill partnering in defence.

Fisher also had an unfamiliar look as trialist Danny Young made his debut at the back wearing the number 6 shirt whilst another trialist in the form of ex-Croydon FC forward Dexter Babalola partnered Raphael Akala up front.

Fisher took the lead in bizarre fashion on the stroke of half-time as a seemingly routine clearance from young Millwall keeper Jamie Farmer ricocheted off Mark Lewis and into the empty net.

Wholesale changes for Millwall at half-time made the second half a more attacking and end to end affair with both sides having chances to score.

Toby Alibi had an effort on the hour mark that was unfortunate to hit the woodwork as Millwall began to press for the equalizer.

It was Fisher however that doubled the lead late on despite the increasing pressure from the away side.

George Savage collected the ball on the edge of the area and let fly with a spectacular 18 yard drive that flew past the sprawling substitute keeper Luke Bartlett and into the corner of the net to effectively end the contest with 10 minutes still to play.

The win was the perfect start to Fisher’s pre-season campaign and they should go into next Wednesday’s tie with Dagenham & Redbridge full of confidence.

Fisher Football Club would like to put on record their thanks to Andy Ambler, Kenny Jackett, Scott Fitzgerald and all at Millwall FC for agreeing to the fixture and would like to wish them every success for the coming season.

Fisher v Millwall – The Battle of Southwark

Champion Hill StadiumFisher take on newly promoted neighbours Millwall just one year after previous incarnation Fisher Athletic were wound up and the club came close to going out of existence entirely.

Following the winding up order, 42 long standing supporters gathered at the Fisher Downside Centre on the evening of 28th May and vowed to keep the club alive. It was decided at the meeting that the club would reform as a supporters owned and run club with each member having an equal stake in the club as well as a say in how the club was run.

Just over a year (or 408 days) later, newly formed Fisher FC host Millwall FC in a pre-season friendly. From the very humble beginnings of trying to find a side to play in our friendlies back in July last year to this Saturdays game against Millwall it’s evident the club has made progress in the short time in existence.

Whilst Millwall’s first team are at Crawley Town on the same day, Millwall have informed the club that they will be bringing a strong XI down to Champion Hill Stadium and the possibility of ex-Fisher Athletic striker Shaun Batt returning to the club where he first made his name is an exciting prospect to look forward to.

Shaun Batt signed for Fisher Athletic from Dagenham & Redbridge in June 2007 and went on to make 33 appearances and score 11 goals, firing Fisher to a 4th placed finish in the Conference South and into the playoffs.

Batt went on to play for Peterborough United at the start of 2008-09 before being loaned out to Millwall in Januray 2010; scoring 3 goals in 16 appearances in the process. Millwall then snapped him up on a permanent transfer on 15 June 2010.

In addition to the presence of Millwall at Champion Hill on Saturday this special occasion also marks Fisher’s official launch as a supporters owned and run club. Following the members vote at the AGM in May, Fisher have now officially registered as an Industrial Provident Society and can guarantee that each and every full member owns an equal share in the club and is entitled to vote and stand for election at each AGM.

We hope to see you there.

Fisher draw Beckenham in cup

Fisher have drawn local rivals Beckenham Town in the Kent Premier Division Cup.

Fisher’s very first competitive game since reforming came against Jason Huntley’s men in a 2-1 defeat last August in front of a sizeable crowd of 222. Fisher then somewhat got revenge for the painful defeat in the return fixture, winning 1-0 thanks to 88th minute tap-in from Elstrom Die in a smash-and-grab win at Eden Park.

The Premier League Cup is set over two legs and although official dates for the fixtures are yet to be confirmed the ties are expected to be played during the last week of October with Fisher playing away at Beckenham Town in the first leg.

Fisher attend Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Carnival

Fisher attended the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Carnival on Saturday, manning a stall in the local groups and charities area.

The aim was to mix it with local people and groups, gauge the clubs support within the area and to distribute recently produced brochures promoting the club and the upcoming pre-season friendlies.

The day also saw the kick-off of the club’s ‘Back to Bermondsey’ campaign, with the give-away of some pin badges in exchange for a small donation to the club.

After a slow start early on, things really picked up by mid-afternoon and the stall provided lots of interest to passers-by. In addition to raising a small amount of money for the club, a lot was learned about local peoples feelings and reactions and wants of people in the area with regard to Fisher.

Thanks to everyone who came along and said hello.

Martin Eede resigns

After long deliberations, Martin Eede has regretfully resigned from the positions of Chairman & Club Secretary with immediate effect.

The Board have reluctantly accepted and would like to thank Martin for all his efforts over the past three years.

Fisher FC Spokesman Joe Arif stated; ‘Martin has been a terrific asset and was especially instrumental in setting up the new Fisher FC after the demise of the old club last year. His experience and contacts in the non-league game have been hugely beneficial. Martin was not only an effective Chairman but also a much needed mentor to many of us. Martin feels the club has come a long way in a relatively short space of time and the Fisher board now possess the right amount of experience to push on. We respect his decision and wish Martin well in his future ventures.’

Fisher manager Gary Lisney said ‘On a personal note I’d like to thank Martin Eede for all his support since I came to the club and I wish him well for the future’. Lisney continued; ‘Bryan Glover (Assistant Manager) and I are both looking forward to the new campaign. I’m in regular contact with the players and many if not all remain 100% committed to the cause.’

The team are due back for pre season training on June 22nd ahead of the friendlies at Champion Hill with Millwall XI on July 10th and Dagenham & Redbridge on the 21st.

Pre-season programme takes shape

A number of friendlies have now been confirmed as part of Fisher’s pre-season campaign.

The pick of the bunch will be the visit of newly promoted Millwall to Champion Hill on the 10th of July as our close neighbours make preparations for next season back in the Championship.

Next up we welcome back Wayne Burnett to the club along with another newly promoted side as League One Dagenham & Redbridge make the trip across the Thames to East Dulwich.

On Saturday the 24th July Fisher make a symbolic yet short-lived return to Rotherhithe as hosts to Ryman North side Leyton FC. This fixture is being played at Mellish Fields, Rotherhithe (Bacon’s College grounds next to Surrey Docks Stadium) and will see the black and white of Fisher playing back in the north end of the Borough for the first time since previous club Fisher Athletic were exiled in 2004.

Fisher then host Croydon FC from the Combined Counties League again at Mellish Fields the following Thursday evening at 19.45.
